Whilst being in Dubai earlier this month I also took time to checkout the local vegan cuisine.
The Dubai sustainable market is increasingly growing and with their expo 2020 vision more and more restaurants are opening catering to vegans and sustainable minded individuals. I went to the very popular vegan spot, Super Natural Kitchen located in the Lafayette gallery in the famous Dubai mall.
Before going on about the dishes and my final judgement I had a chat with the owner Athena about their vision and concept of the restaurant.
1. What was the inspiration behind super natural kitchen?
Super natural kitchen came about as a way to encourage people may conscious choices when it comes to food, to show people that vegan food is not only the most sustainable, the most ethical and gentle choice you can make but also the most delicious.
2. In what way is the restaurant sustainable?
We have a no plastic policy! We use stainless steal reusable straws and vegeware compostable takeaway containers. Our menu is 100% vegan meaning we serve food that doesn't drain the resources of the planet or pollute it during its production.
3. Dubai is focusing on becoming more sustainable for the upcoming expo, how do you find the food market is changing ?
I have found that recently we re getting more and more newly vegan customers, since what the health care out on netflix we have customers coming in weekly telling us about how that changed their way of thinking. More options for vegans are becoming available in mainstream restaurants and the over all understanding of where i food comes from seems to be improving
4. What is the best selling dishes and your favourite?
Our best selling dish is the portobello mushroom burger which uses the mushroom for the bun and is packed full of cheese sauce, tomato, crispy onion, lettuce and homemade pickles with a side of creamy coleslaw. My favourite dish is the smoked salmon on onion bread with cashew chive cream cheese, we make the salmon out of papaya!
5. What's the future plans for super natural kitchen ?
We have a meal plan launching with go organic this October, we will also be holding more events and workshops where we teach people how to make vegan food at home.
So lets get to it! Me and my tasting guest could not resist to start the order with their whole coconut drinks! Doesn't get more fresh than that and after you finish the juice you can scrape the coconut right out and have as dessert! We then moved on to the cheesy (vegan of course) kale salad. The Lasagna and the truffle mushroom pizza. I cant tell you how delicious the cheese was on all these dishes, its even better than the real thing. The kale salad was light and perfect portion as a started. The lasagna was a little confusing as it was a cold dish and it was string vegetables layered. Still tasty but dont expect a traditional hot cheesy lasagna option, perhaps the name is confusing. My favourite was the truffle pizza, especially the base pastry that melted in the mouth. All in all I wish I came back to try more things on the menu as pretty much everything looked amazing. I would highly recommend not just vegans but anyone thats in the mall to stop by as the food is not just yummy but also full of nutritions and give a energy boost after a long day of walking around.
Bonus points for the section next to the kitchen with raw and vegan groceries and treats available to buy to take home. Stock up on the bars as it can be difficult to find vegan snacks in the smaller local food shops.
