Even though I've seen Everdine's name pop up on my social media I didn't realise it was made from sustainable ingredients until I had a request to cover them.
Everdine is subscription based food delivery that prepares your meal, freezes it and sends it to you with your customised choice of frequency. Before we get to my review let's exchange a few questions with the owner.
What inspired Everdine to be created?
I care about healthy eating. Unfortunately, in practice, that is often in conflict with the flexibility I want and need in my professional and personal life. In the past, I would often buy healthy food, only to have it go off in my fridge before I got around to eating it (leading to a lot of food - and money - wasted). At other times, having the fridge full of fresh food, I would find myself restricted in other ways (e.g. I would feel compelled to eat at home, even though I would have liked to eat out with friends). The alternative (that is, food that keeps), on the other hand, would typically be at odds with a healthy lifestyle - think pizzas and other staple canned or frozen food, which is often high in all the nasties like preservatives, sugar, saturated fats etc. that I, like many others, am trying to avoid. To my surprise, there were literally no good offerings available at all that would balance these things - be healthy, taste great, be diverse, and keep for a long time. That's how the idea for Everdine started.
In what way is Everdine's food sustainable?
First of all, of our meals are made from some of the finest sustainably-sourced produce available. Our requirements are strict before we consider using any ingredient in our food. Thanks to our excellent supplier relationships, we are able to source the highest-quality ingredients and know everything about their origin and production processes. Secondly, our packaging is eco-friendly by design – 95% is recyclable and most of it is also biodegradable and made from recycled materials. We even keep your food frozen using eco-friendly sheep’s wool insulation. Thirdly, the fact that our food is frozen right after cooking and kept frozen until you eventually consume it, means Everdine produces literally zero food waste, both in our kitchen and at the customers' homes. Finally, research is suggesting that having your shopping (in our case: meals) sent to your home by courier is actually better for the planet (think, for example, lower carbon footprint), than each of us individually going to stores in city centres. So, in sum we believe that eating Everdine is actually more sustainable than buying your own ingredients and cooking them yourself.
Can I order for two or more people receiving the same meal?
Absolutely! You have full control over which meals you receive every week and how many of each you get. Simply swap out the meals you don’t want and swap in the ones you do.
What are the future plans for Everdine?
We currently serve England, Scotland and Wales exclusively. However, we believe that Everdine is a very attractive offering that would find many fans in other countries. We are looking to launch in other markets and will do so as soon as we feel we are able to offer the same top-notch service and offering there as well.
My delivery consisted of 8 packaged meals with a combination of vegetarian, fish and chicken dishes (you can customise this too). The instructions on the packaging is fairy easy to follow, either microwave and oven bake between 10-30 min depending on the dish and enjoy your meal. With the help of a panel I consumed all meals within a week and here's the verdict. The food all tastes as good as read made meals will ever taste, meaning if you expect freshness and Michelin star standard this isn't for you. But if you're looking for a quick meal at work or if you don't have time to prep your own food and want something sustainably sourced then this is great! The food does taste good, although some of the saucier dishes became a little watery in the microwave so I would advise to oven bake those. I'm not including any of my own pictures apart as the press pictures do the dishes better justice. The packaging includes instructions, the ingredient values and allergy advice My favourite of the dishes were he curries and the vegetarian dishes were delicious.
PROS: It's quick no fuss and it does taste good unlike the artificial mush ready made frozen meals tend to be. The price point is not high if you usually cook for one person and it saves you a lot of time if you dont want to make your own.
CONS: The watery foods that are better to oven make to avoid soup wouldn't be suitable at an office. Some of the food required salt but that's a preference thing. The food wont look as appetising as the pictures but it will still taste good.
