Finding vegan comfort food has always been a struggle for me, especially when it comes to ordering junk food on a sunday night.
There are some popular pizza chains that recently started offering one or two vegan options but realistically its a limited choice and sometimes they are closed (1 am pizza anyone?)
So when I found out about the new gluten free frozen pizzas I was keen to try their two vegan options - Viva la vegan and Smokin vegan.
They come packaged as any regular frozen pizza, with a plastic wrapping and instructions on the heating time. Pop in the oven for 30 min and voila you have a vegan gluten free pizza. Taste wise they are the same as most frozen pizza dishes, the vegetables dont feel as fresh as a take out pizza but it still hits the spot and satisfies cravings. Out of the two choices smokin vegan was my favourite. The more exciting product they offer is their gluten free pizza base. This is brilliant not just for gluten free diets but also for vegans to put fresh vegetables and be creative. All in all a very good range and I cant wait to see future products by this brand.
As the most requested (and searched for by myself) type of reviews are often food related, I have another exciting one for you. This one is by Vivera Foods and they mimic and replace all the meat cravings I have been missing. Here are the three variation of products that I tried and the outcome. I would make a recipe and show you pictures of my own creations however I think there are wonderful vegan bloggers out there already so this is just to cover how well I think the replacements worked and how I used them.
The Shawarma Kebab
This is my favourite out of all the produces that I have tried. Perhaps its because I havent had the real deal wrap in years, but with some lettuce and garlic sauce I swear this stuff tastes exactly the same! I even like it so much I use this in hearty stews and salads. Definite winner for a meat replacement!
The Fish fingers
Tastes of fish fingers but the texture is slightly different. However do fish fingers even taste of real fish? Works well as a replacement but as someone past the age of 14, I'm personally no longer into fish fingers. I can imagine this going down well with kids.
Steak is always the trickiest when it comes to replacement. The texture, the taste and the way you can have a variation of how raw it tastes is near impossible to nail. The closest I have tried have been the B12 burger by Moving Mountains, everything else tastes of vegetables. The Vivera burger didnt taste of vegetables, in fact it resembled very much the B12 burger with a meaty taste thats a mix of lamb and beef. I wouldn't serve this as a steak replacement but use it as a patty for burgers.
All in all, Vivera is serving some great options, every time I find them in a grocery shop I make sure to stock up on the kebab and try new dishes. Highly recommend this brand for not just vegans but those who are looking to eat less meat on a regular basis.
Before I start this review, I have to note to you that I was so excited to try the food when it arrived I tore the packaging off and the food itself as all microwavable food isnt the prettiest to look at...
So anyways lets dive into the review!
Allplants is no the first of its kind in terms of delivering frozen food to your door step. However, it is one of the first to JUST provide plant based meals. I personally already had not the greatest experience with a frozen meals brand where all the veggie dishes tasted of cardboard so my bar was set low from the start.
The three dishes I chose in my box were Cashew Mac, Super Green Risotto and Moussaka. The box arrived in an eco friendly packaging with instructions on how to recycle the freeze bags (I kept them because I find them useful but if you dont, then dont throw them away). Each dish is portioned for two people and have different art on the label. The whole concept feels like a very needed updated edit of frozen food.
Now the most important question, did it taste good? As always when I try food I got some tasting help from friends to give the dishes a fair evaluation. The result? The food tastes amazing. Especially the comfort food dishes such as the cashew mac and the moussaka. My personal favourite being the cashew mac. I'm already snooping on other dishes to try next as this was a definite hit even if youre not a vegan this is an enjoyable and time efficient solution to the days youre not in the mood to make your own meals.
I cant express how excited I was when I found Follow your heart as a brand during my search for vegan egg replacements. The brand covers a variety of vegan substitute product such as different types of cheese, mayonnaise, and most notably eggs!
I tested the products with dishes for me and friends for a month for a few months and here is the breakdown of my 3 favourite products! All products are linked to the website where you can find your nearest stockist.
The Bleu Cheese Sauce - I used this mainly to make vegan steak (you can get substitutes from brands like quorn) bleu cheese wraps. It was also delicious as a dip for nachos and crisps. It tastes no different than your regular melted bleu cheese dip.
The Shredded Mozzarella - As a big fan of adding cheese to basically anything oven baked, this was a great substitute not only for home made pizza but I also sprinkled this over baked egg plants, quorn mince and salads. You can be really creative with this one for any dishes you would normally place cheese. The taste with this was a little more bland than regular mozzarella but thats nothing a little salt and garlic herbs cant solve.
The Vegan Eggs- Here is where it gets real exciting. The packaging for this product is the first notable aspect as it looks like a regular egg packaging. Slight disappointment to open and see that there were no egg shaped fake eggs in there but a yellow powder. This powder is mixed with water and then used as what would be a liquid and beaten egg replacement. I used this to make my scrambled eggs (throw in some avocados and red onions for an extra delicious omelette) and although it tasted slightly different to you regular morning eggs, it was still delicious! Possibly the best egg replacement I have yet to taste on the market as of yet!
I love wine.
As in I love it so much I have dedicated apps on my phone to store and rate all the type of wines I have tasted. I’m not a self declared expert but I really appreciate it enough to be able to tell bad from good wine. So this time we are putting the wines from Sustainable Wines UK to the test. Before we dive in we caught up with a representative from the brand behind the wines to discuss their brand and vision. Continue reading for the full review...
